April Wrap Up: Reading, Watching, Listening
Hey friends! Can you believe that April is over already? I feel like April flew by! I was sort of in a reading slump this past month, but I’m not even sure I could call it that. I just read slower than I normally do, but the books I did read were fantastic!
What I Read in April
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
I re-read ADSOM so that I could finally read the other two books in this series. When I first read ADSOM last year, I sort of struggled with it and wondered if this series would be for me. But I wanted to try again because I’d really fallen in love with Schwab’s writing last year when I read This Savage Song and Our Dark Duet and I’m so glad I gave this book another chance! I liked ADSOM a lot more the second time around and I was finally ready to read the rest of the series!
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
I LOVED Children of Blood and Bone! This book was fantastic and I honestly can’t wait to read the rest of this series. The world was beautifully crafted and the characters were flawed and amazing. You can read my full review here.
A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
I finally started AGOS and I read the physical copy as well as listened to the audiobook during the day when I was nursing my baby. I feel like I’ve been watching way too much TV so I decided to listen to more audiobooks, and we’ll get to that in a second, but wow… I liked this book more than ADSOM and you need to run to pick up this series right now! I’m hoping to write a series review soon.
A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
Gah. Schwab is an amazing storyteller. I can’t say too much about ACOL because you really do just need to read this story for yourself. There’s so many twists and turns and it’s dark but oh so wonderful. I’m actually still in the middle of ACOL but I am loving this story!
What I listened to in April
I actually really like audiobooks, as long as the narrator is good. I’ve been trying to listen to books more instead of having the TV on all day (I like having noise since it’s just me and the baby and the dog home all day and if it get’s too quiet I feel anxious.) I also have to ask, do you have any favorite audiobooks that you would recommend for me to listen to next? As I mentioned before, I listened to AGOS (for some of the book) and read the rest. So that was one audiobook that I listened too. I also read/listened to these books:
Goodbye Things by Fumio Sasaki
I watched the Minimalism documentary on Netflix and decided that it was time to do some changing. I’ve felt cluttered and surrounded by a lot of things that I don’t use very often, so I’ve been slowly going through all of my things and getting rid of things, one at a time, just like this book talks about. I don’t think I’ll be throwing everything away like this guy did, but I do want to have a simpler wardrobe, easier access to kitchen utensils and I’m hoping to only keep books that I really love.
Young Adulting Podcast
One of my really good friends recommended this podcast to me and I wanted to give it a go. Each week these girls pick a YA book to read and then discuss on their podcast. I’m discovering new books in my favorite genre and it’s another way to see what people are saying about YA books. You can check out the podcast here, I highly recommend it!
What I Watched in April
As I’ve mentioned a few times, Netflix has been my best friend since I had my baby. When I first had her back in February I got in the habit of turning Netflix on while I was feeding her and then leaving it on while she slept so she didn’t get used to sleeping in silence. And now, even though I don’t love having the TV on all the time, I like the noise. So, lately, I’ve been watching/listening to/or just having the TV on and watching Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve never watched it and I actually find all of the drama entertaining. I’m currently on season 8 and I’m hooked.
Another show I’ve been streaming is White Collar. I don’t like it as much as other shows I’ve watched, so this is the one I turn on when I just want noise and then I write or work on my blog while my baby sleeps.
I grew up watching (and loving) American Idol. I decided to give this new season a chance, and while I don’t like it as much as the old seasons, I think there are a lot of talented singers that I’m already rooting for (like Catie Turner) and I can’t wait to see her journey!
