When I was 19-years-old and full of faith and love for my Savior I took a leap and served an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Every day I would wake up, study the scriptures, and then go talk to people about Christ. I invited everyone I came in contact with to come closer to Christ by exercising faith in Him and changing because of their faith. I was changed in the process and I am forever grateful for the experiences I had as a missionary.
Earlier this month during General Conference our Prophet, Russell M. Nelson talked about how we need to be using the full name of the church when we are talking to people. We have a very common nickname “Mormons” but we truly are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And while sometimes that feels like a mouthful to say (or type) It feels so much better than just saying we’re “Mormon’s.”
We are truly members of Christ’s church!
And we need to share HIM with the world. As President Nelson was talking during Conference I was thinking about how every day as a missionary I would introduce myself like this “Hi, I’m Sister Burningham. I am a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, would you like to learn more about Christ?” My focus as a missionary was talking about Jesus Christ and His church. It makes so much sense to me that we should place a greater emphasis on His name because it is truly Him who we worship and who we follow.
I know it will take some getting used to, using the proper name of His church. But I also know that if there is power in a name and there is power in using Christ’s name. I am so grateful to be alive at this time when we have the opportunity to talk of Christ and learn of Him daily! I hope to instill the same love I have for Him in Von as well.
