9 Mistakes I made when I first started bloggingRead More
Making some changes that I talked about months ago and taking a step in a new direction. It feels scary and like I’m trying to be brave, but I’m following my heart and what I feel as though God is telling me to do.Read More

Everywhere I look, bloggers are telling you and me to use Wordpress when starting a blog.
And not Wordpress.com, but having a self-hosted site and then using Wordpress.org to create your website.
I’ve been blogging for 10+ years now. I started out with Blogger, then used Bluehost/Wordpress, then SiteGround/Wordpress, and now I use Squarespace.
Why did I switch from Wordpress to Squarespace?
Honestly, there were a few things that played a role in my decision.
1) I don’t know how to code.
Now, this isn’t a huge deal if you have a Wordpress site. You can still create a beautiful site on your own or buy a theme to make your site look like you want it. My problem was the amount of time that it took to get my website up and running. I wanted things that I didn’t know how to do in code + I didn’t have a huge budget starting out. Plus, I tend to change things on my blog fairly often and didn’t want to spend money on a theme that I didn’t absolutely love.
2) I know all the prices right up front.
Squarespace has all of their prices right up front. It’ straightforward and the prices have been the same for year, I think they are here to stay. Squarespace has 4 different levels for their pricing, depending on what you want. Everything is clear and straight forward. When I was with a self hosted site, it was great for the first year (or 2-3, depending on how much you pay when you initially sign up, but then the price goes up) I feel like this is talked about, but not enough.
I love how straight forward and easy it is to know exactly how much you’ll pay with Squarespace. You also have the option to pay month by month instead of yearly if that’s something you need. You can check out all of the pricing here.
3) The ultimate reason why I switched was because I’ve been thinking about it for years.
A good friend of mine LOVES Squarespace and every time I visited her site, I knew that I wanted the cleaner look that Squarespace offers. I also loved the idea of setting up my entire website before hitting publish so I could know exactly what it was going to look like before it was up and running. When you sign up with Squarespace you get a 14-day trial to set up your website before paying or launching it!
I am a few months into my switch and every day I’m grateful I took the leap. Moving over my content was a lot easier than I expected it to be (I’m working on a post right now about how you can switch to Squarespace too) and I truly do love my site. I’m still getting it to be exactly where I want it, but we’re on the way there and I couldn’t be happier.
Have you switched blogging platforms before? Which one do you use, and why do you like it?
Some links below are affiliate links. This means if you choose to make a purchase, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you. You can read my full disclosure here. At the end of 2018, I knew that I wanted to keep talking about personal things here on my blog. I'm great at over-sharing online, which is something I want to be better at. But, I still want to keep things real and personal over here. I decided to share a life update every month (or every couple of months, depending on how often you want to read posts like this) sharing the things I'm currently loving, watching, reading, or doing with my family. January was a great month! I'm ready and excited for everything that 2019 holds. I've got some big goals in regards to my family and my blog (which you can read about here). And even though January started off with the flu and a hospital visit, it only went up from there!
...I am trying to watch less TV in 2019. I feel like I spent a lot of time last year on the couch watching some of my favorite shows. Especially right after Von was born, I was trying to figure out how to function and well, we made it through with lots of TV shows. But now that Von is getting older I don't really want her to see me watching TV all the time, so I've definitely been cutting back on my TV time. ...That being said, I've been watching some really great shows. I've been watching The Bachelor, Grey's Anatomy (I am LOVING this new season so much! It's giving me a lot of feels that remind me of Grey's at the very beginning, anyone else feel this way?), and I just started A Million Little Things because my sister recommended it! So far so good on that front + lots of tears because it's a sad show. ...Older shows that I've been watching are Friends (I'm almost done and idk what I'll watch when it's over!), Criminal Minds, Bones (re-watching), and Burn Notice (re-watching). I don't watch most of these shows every day, but I've been turning to one of these during the day. In the evenings and on the weekends, Griffin and I have been watching Kitchen Nightmares.
...I just finished The Cruel Prince (read my review) and I can't stop thinking about it. So many dark twists and turns, it really got me in the mood for more good fantasy books! ...I also finished Girl, Wash Your Face (review coming soon) which was the Book Lovers Book Club pick for the month of January. We've been talking about it on our Facebook page this week and overall I really enjoyed it. In February we'll be reading Sky in the Deep which is a fantasy novel that's part Wonder Woman part Viking. I'm stoked to read it! Be sure to join my book club if you want to read good books and meet more book lovers! ...I'm currently reading Ever the Hunted, The Power of Habit, and Almighty. (No, I'm not good at reading one book at a time) I am really enjoying all of them!
...ConvertKit. I am upping my email game in 2019 and just made the switch from MailerLite to ConvertKit and already I am loving it. ConvertKit is easy to use, simple, and well already worth the price! Plus, once you get your account set up and get things going, ConvertKit will send you a free shirt! I love mine! ...Space Heaters. Specifically this one. It's been a cold winter and living in an older (and less insulated) apartment has made for chilly days. The heating in our apartment is electric and works okay-ish. We have space heaters in both bedrooms and one in our family area for the cold days and nights and I'm grateful for them! ... 2-hour church! And more specifically, the new Come, Follow Me curriculum. I am loving studying it on my own and at church. We're still figuring out how (and when) the family study works best for us, but so far I am loving it. And the kids in our primary class love how short everything. It's great too because every Sunday we talk about Christ, get to read a few scriptures, and we almost always have some sort of coloring activity. It's awesome. ...Grocery Pickup. I have been a huge fan of Walmart's grocery pick-up for years and this year is no different. I love it because I don't end up with random things in my cart because I don't walk around the store while being hungry (and let's face it, I'm still nursing and I'm still hungry all. the. time.) Which means I know exactly how much everything will cost (which is great in helping us keep our budget!) and pick up is fast and easy. Love it. ...My Simplified Planner. I would be lost without a planner. I forget nearly everything unless I write it down, and I've been loving mine. It's beautiful and there is so much space! So far it's one of my favorite purchases from 2018, definitely worth every penny. They still have planners for 2019, so if you don't have one yet you can snag one + get $10 off here. Well, that's everything for now! How has 2019 been treating you so far? Tell me something that you're currently loving, reading, and watching! Especially watching, I need some new shoes or else I'm just gonna re-watch Grey's Anatomy until the end of time... which I might still do ;)
Have you ever had something that you loved and wanted to build a life out of? For a long time I dreamed that I could get paid to read and talk about books (and maybe some day that will happen 😉). But one thing that I've wanted to do for a long time is make blogging my business. I started blogging because it was a way for me to get my thoughts out. I don't remember the name of my first blog. Probably because I started it 10 years ago when I was in high school. I wrote about my life, my friends, my boyfriends, and I remember a post about cheerleaders that I wrote in anger one day that still makes me cringe. But I started blogging back then because I loved writing. And I loved the idea of people reading what I wrote.
I started blogging because it was something I loved.
But it wasn't until recently that it really hit me how I could make blogging my job. For years I've thought about how I wanted to work from home as a writer and a blogger. But I never really thought about how to do it. Now that I'm home with Von, I thought it would be a good time to get more serious about blogging. I love to write and I want to help and serve you with my words. This blog is for me but it's also for you. I want to inspire and help you live your best, most purposeful life. Because that's the life I'm striving to live, and I want to show you how.
And for me, it all started with blogging.
Is there something that you love to do? Something that fills you up and makes you feel like a kid on Christmas when you think about it? Honestly, that's how blogging is for me. I read blog posts about blogging all the time. I'm always learning and finding new ways to be a better blogger because it's what I love to do. I am a firm believer in following your passions. I'm also a firm believer in that our true purpose in life comes from loving and serving God and other people. And what better way to do that than through something we already love!?
