I really enjoyed The Cruel Prince when I read it in January. And I waited rather impatiently for a couple of weeks (I know, such a big problem) to get a copy of The Wicked King from my library. It finally came and I picked it up on Saturday and read most of it, then I finished reading it on Tuesday. This book. This series. It will destroy you but in the very best way! When I finished the book, I just held it in my lap for a few minutes staring at it. Do you know those books that make you fall in love with reading again? Well, this book did that for me. I loved (and hated) all of the characters and I was pulled in again and again by the story. This is one fantasy series that you don't want to miss.
This next part does contain spoilers from The Cruel Prince, so if you haven't read that yet, don't read anymore! You can read my review about The Cruel Princehere.
We start off The Wicked King with Cardan on the throne as king but Jude is really in control. I really enjoyed watching their relationship throughout this book. In The Cruel Prince there is sooo much hate and then some love but still more hate. And in The Wicked King, I felt like they were still both as dark and evil (not really the right word, morally gray works better) but they are starting to understand each other more. Plus they are able to see how they can use each other more to get what they want. I love their hate to love to hate to love to hate relationship that they have. It's definitely not healthy, but it is addicting to read about. I cannot wait to see what happens in book three. The Wicked King had a more interesting story than The Cruel Prince. We already know about Faerie and the rules and I felt like there wasn't quite as much build up in The Wicked King simply because we already had the basics of the world, which meant we could jump right into the story. And there is so much happening, so many people plotting murder on other people and the politics of the kingdom are very interesting.I was super surprised by the ending (and again, can it be 2020 yet so I can have book three in my hands?!) but I also thought that the ending was very true to Cardan's character. I can't wait to see what happens next. If you've read either The Cruel Prince or The Wicked King let me know because I would love to chat about them. Now, excuse me while I run over to Amazon to order my own copies of these because I want them in my physical library!

I read the first few pages of The Cruel Prince last March. At the same time I picked up another book (that I can't remember) but that I didn't love. Then I spent the last 10 months not liking The Cruel Prince because I thought it was that other book. I decided to pick up The Cruel Prince again because The Wicked King just came out and everyone seems to adore this series! I thought that I could give it another try and I am so glad I did! The Cruel Prince follows a mortal girl, Jude, who's taken from our world into the land of Faerie because her mother had run away from Faerie with Jude's older sister. Jude then grows up in Faerie but is considered less because she's a mortal. I LOVED this book so much. Everyone is so morally grey and you hate them and love them all at the same time. The world was fascinating and I want to go to Faerie, even though it isn't the greatest place for morals. But I still want to go :) The Cruel Prince had me captivated from the very beginning. The main character Jude is one that you'll love and also hate, and the same goes for Prince Cardan. I feel like I can't say a lot about this book because I went in not knowing a lot and it made the story so much better! But I will say that there is death and murder and love and magic and all the best things you need for a fantasy novel. I definitely recommend The Cruel Prince if you've been looking for a great fantasy world that you want to escape too. The Cruel Prince will pull at all of your emotions in the best (and worst) ways. And then you'll run to pick up The Wicked King because you'll need to know what happens next. I can't wait to dive into The Wicked King.

Vengeful by VE Schwab
Vengeful is the sequel to Vicious, so I won't be sharing a lot of details from Vengeful because I don't want to give spoilers. I picked up Vicious for the first time this year, I recently fell in love with VE Schwab's writing and I am now trying to read everything she's written! I read Vicious this summer and I loved it. It's super dark and I would say that there is a trigger warning for suicide. Vicious is about two college students, Victor and Eli who discover that if they have near-death experiences they can get superpowers (and are then called ExtraOrdinaries (EOs)) During Vicious Eli is going after other EOs to get rid of them and Victor is trying to stop him. Throughout both books, we follow Eli and Victor through college as well as in the present day. The timeline for these books aren't exactly linear, but it was pretty easy to keep everything straight. This story will have you hooked from the very first page. I read Vicious in a couple of days and would have done the same with Vengeful if I had been able to just sit and read.
What I liked about Vengeful
In Vengeful, we follow a few more characters, namely Marcella and June. These two women are bada** and ready to rule the world. I love how Victoria described this book, she said that in Vengeful Eli and Victor are both losing control but Marcella and June are taking/gaining control. So much female power in this book! It was the book we all need in 2018 (or 2019 if you haven't picked it up yet!) I thought that the story in Vengeful was good and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen to all of my favorite characters. Also, VE Schwab has a way of making you fall in love (or at least like) the villain in the book. Eli is essentially the villain (at least in Vicious) and by the end of Vengeful your heart will be breaking for him. Side note... but HOW DOES SHE DO THAT IN EVERY SINGLE BOOK?!?!!? Anyway, this book will make you like all the morally grey characters and will leave you asking the question, does one good thing make a bad person good? Or does one bad thing make a good person bad? Gah... I don't really know how to explain it, but you'll find yourself asking this throughout the book. You'll be rooting for all of the characters, even the ones that aren't that great. I do think that I liked Vicious just a tiny bit more, but Vengeful was still so so so so good. I gave Vengeful (and Vicious) 5 out of 5 stars.
About Vengeful by VE Schwab
Book Summary for Vicious (so there's no spoilers for Vengeful!)
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?
