Wow. Just wow.

October has been such a good reading month for me! On the 4th I picked up The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. This was our October pick for the book club that I run over on Facebook. I’ve had this book on my shelf for almost a year now and I finally picked it up.

Right away I was swept into the story. The writing was amazing and captivating and the story was creepy and magical and I could. not. put. it. down.

I finished it in just one day! (something I don’t do often these days since I’ve got a toddler keeping me busy.) but this one I couldn’t stop reading.

I had to know what was going to happen.

In The Wicked Deep we follow Penny who has lived on the same little island all her life. Every year, on June first, three sisters, three witches, that were drowned 200 years ago come back and take control of three girl’s bodies. Then throughout the next three weeks, until the summer solstice, they lure boys into the ocean to kill them.

Dark right? And creepy? Gah. So creepy. But also so good.

Every year the people in town have no idea which three girls have been ‘chosen’. They have no idea which three girls are now these witches.

Penny likes to stay away from the festivities, especially since her father disappeared mysteriously three years ago. But this year she goes with her best friend. Running into the outsider Bo who has come looking for work. Midnight hits and she stays out of the water but the water still sings to her, like it does all of the girls. She brings Bo back to the island where she lives to live in the small cottage and take care of the lighthouse, she goes to bed and wakes up just like normal.

I was wildly impressed by The Wicked Deep. Right before the big plot twist, I figured out what was going to happen. I was still a little shocked by some things near the end, but I did figure some things out.

The Wicked deep was such a fun read and I highly recommend it. Even though it takes place in summer it is a perfect read this October because of the witches and magic.

Have you read The Wicked Deep? What did you think?

About The Wicked Deep

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…

Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.
