I started making my list of favorite books read in 2019 and Evvie Drake Starts Over definitely makes the list.

I honestly wasn’t expecting much from Evvie Drake Starts Over. I’ve seen it all over Bookstagram but I still wasn’t sure about it. When I saw it on the “new” shelf at my library I said ‘why not?’ and checked it out.

AND I’m so glad that I did!

This was the perfect amount of real life, funny, and romance. If you’re looking for a lighter read and one full of hope, this one’s for you.

We follow Evvie Drake who’s just lost her husband Tim. She’s trying to navigate life without him + carrying around a huge secret that no one knows about but her. Evvie was going to leave her husband, she was packing up when she got the call and she has no idea how to deal with the emotions of being a widow to someone she was planning to leave.

Evvie has a small apartment at the back of her house and her best friend Andy has a friend, Dean, who needs a place to stay.

They have two rules. He doesn’t ask about her dead husband and she doesn’t ask why he’s not playing baseball anymore.

I fell in love with Evvie and Dean, with their relationship but also their characters. Evvie was so relatable. She was trying so hard to keep it all together, to please everyone, to live the life she felt like she was ‘supposed to live’. Dean has his own struggles and issues that he’s got to work through too and I loved watching them grow.

I also really really loved the writing style. So many times I felt like I was sitting right there at the table with all of the characters. The story truly came to life for me and I loved that.

Evvie also deals with the fact that she was in an emotionally abusive marriage. This was and wasn’t a big part of the book. It was a part of her life, but it wasn’t the center of everything. I thought the author did a great job talking about emotional abuse in a way that wasn’t triggering to me (as someone who was in an abusive relationship in the past). It was something that Evvie had to go through, but in the end she came out stronger.

This story is about hope, love, moving on, and being true to yourself. 5/5 stars

About Evvie Drake Starts Over:

In a small town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her house. Everyone in town, including her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and she doesn’t correct them. In New York, Dean Tenney, former major-league pitcher and Andy’s childhood friend, is struggling with a case of the “yips”: he can’t throw straight anymore, and he can’t figure out why. An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button.

When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken–and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they’ll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they’ve broken, the plans they’ve changed, and the secrets they’ve kept. They’ll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance–right up until the last out.
